Debbie got her start in Hollywood after she entered a beauty contest to win the title of Miss Burbank. You see, Debbie didn't want to win, she only entered to receive the free blouse they were giving away to all the entrants. Her bathing suit that she wore during the contest had a hole in the rear which her mother quickly repaired before the went to the contest. She borrowed a pair of high heels from a friend that were much too large and stuffed the toes with tissue so she could wear them. Debbie's mentor was Betty Hutton and she did a lip syncing routine to "I'm A Square Peg In A Social Circle." Quite to Debbie's surprise, she won! And the little tomboy's career was about to begin in the movies.
